Government Warns of "Catastrophic" U.S. Quake
KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Reuters) - People in a vast seismic zone in the southern and Midwestern United States would face catastrophic damage if a major earthquake struck there and should ensure that builders keep that risk in mind, a government report said on Thursday.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency said if earthquakes strike in what geologists define as the New Madrid Seismic Zone, they would cause "the highest economic losses due to a natural disaster in the United States."
FEMA predicted a large earthquake would cause "widespread and catastrophic physical damage" across Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee -- home to some 44 million people.
Tennessee is likely to be hardest hit, according to the study that sought to gauge the impact of a 7.7 magnitude earthquake in order to guide the government's response.
In Tennessee alone, it forecast hundreds of collapsed bridges, tens of thousands of severely damaged buildings and a half a million households without water.
Transportation systems and hospitals would be wrecked, and police and fire departments impaired, the study said.

New Madrid fault
Thu, 07/22/2010 - 07:33There are a lot of exercises with the civilian agencies and local government, not to mention FEMA and DHS who are very concerned over what will happen if this blows. Even the U.S Army Corps of Engineers is worried! If the New Madrid erupts as it did back int he 1800s America will find itself crippled beyond beilief! Multiple catastrophic problems will result from this event... you have to ask yourself when, and what will yoru response be? Can you grow your own food? You will more than likely be without power, AC, many of the foods you enjoy, let alone internet and TV. Multiple cell towers will be non-functional... the list goes on and on...
New Madrid

New Madrid and current levels of flooding
Sun, 05/08/2011 - 14:35I saw a quick question earlier concerning the New Madrid fault and the current level fo flooding the Mississippi River basin is experiencing right now. What possibilities exist for this massive movement of such a large body of water to cause and or trigger a major shift in the tectonic plates of the New Madrdi Fault seismic zone?
Remember... major levels of earth are being moved by this massive river. Just some food for thought. If this were to go, it would cripple this great country of ours. Yet, we should always look up! Our time to soon join our Lord and Savior is drawing ever closer!!
movement
Thu, 05/12/2011 - 16:24How is the earth being moved by the water? It should be soaking into the ground and weighting it down, but how is it moving it?
