funny that Osteen out-and-out states that he is basically, a motivational speaker. and yet he has the biggest "church" in the US. no one sees the difference as impaired vision is in full swing. isnt Finney one of your fave ppl, grafted? I like him, too--not particularly folksy, nor might he have had perfect hair--and, he had the GALL to tell us to bend the knee! we need more Finneys.
I'm not sure how I led you to believe that I liked Charles G. Finney, but I am of the belief that because of all of the "Models" of how to "get a response" from people, based solely on emotions, is a big part of why there are so many "false conversions" today. For example, did you know that it was C.G. Finney that introduced the playing of music at the end of the sermon, so as to stir up the emotions of the congregants, that they would "come down front" to make a profession of Christ? This is just one of many ways that Finney introduced "results by numbers" of professions of Christ, that by the way, he admitted before he died, that it was a failure.
So, I do not support the way that so many Church's follow this "results by numbers", or the "stirring up of emotions" model, it is not biblical.
I do like Finney, tho, but agree with you and HIM re the altar call or invitation. my mother still asks me why my brother doesnt go to church, as he "went forward" when he was a young boy.

That's what a large number of what people my age call "conversion".
Good point. Some churches operate like businesses...actually following a business model... Making sure everyone fills out a card, have them check what "ministry" they want to participate in next, using peer pressure to extricate involvement, stirring up emotions using voice inflections and music, put "pretty people" on stage, offer fellowship groups that use Bible study packets and books offered in your bookstore,...no wonder there are so many false conversions...then they wonder why their life is still so messed up. They totally missed Jesus and they don't even know it. They are being set up for disappointment and anger at the church when their life doesn't pan out the way it is being promised to them. But people don't seem to care, they want the stirred up emotions and "feel good" sermons. Look at the size of the congregations in these churches! It is crazy!
Good to hear from you maranatha. : )
I second that, GG. Hey, Maranatha!!
" professing a form of godliness
but denying the power thereof ..."
The mega gatherings might want to leave the motivational seminars to Anthony Robbins - Most gatherings ( I wont even use the word - church) are the 'Herodians' (which were a group of believers that mixed 'worldliness' with the gospel).
And we are surprised the world sees this hypocrisy and -like others have mentioned here - the human wake of destruction of people who have a 'conversion of assent' .but not the true 'rebirth ' as the Scriptures teach
.....Talk about ' pershing without knowledge'
What about 1) Knowing what Jesus said ( seek)
2) Following what Jesus said (obey)
3) ASKing the Father in Jesus name (Daily) to help in our weakness to fufill 1. and 2.
"The Greatest Words Ever Spoken"
